Day 1

Welcome to Peru!

2
Day 2

City Tour in Lima

Duration: 4 hours

We’ll visit the residential neighborhoods of Miraflores and San Isidro, where we’ll see the Huaca Pucllana, a pre-Inca ceremonial temple shaped like a pyramid that has retained much of its structure intact despite the passage of time, and El Olivar, the city’s financial district. We’ll also stroll along the Miraflores boardwalk and Larcomar, where we’ll have views of the Pacific Ocean.

Colonial Lima:

We’ll visit the city’s historic center, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. Lima, known as the City of Kings, was the capital of the Spanish colony in the 16th century. We’ll visit San Martín Square, with its balconies and old colonial mansions; the Plaza de Armas, where the Government Palace is located; the Cathedral of Lima; the Municipal Palace and the Archbishop’s Palace; and the Desamparados train station, among other sites.

San Francisco Convent and Catacombs:

We will visit one of the most important convents of the 17th century. We will tour the old library, the choir, the main cloister, and the underground crypts known as the catacombs.

At the end of the tour, we will return to the hotel.

3
Day 3

Trip to Arequipa

Today you will return to the airport to catch your flight to the city of Arequipa.

You should arrive at the airport 2 hours before your domestic flight.

Upon your arrival at the Arequipa airport, our representative will meet you.

Located on the slopes of the Misti volcano, the magical city of Arequipa is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is often known as “The White City” because of its use of white volcanic stone, called sillar, as a building material. The result is a series of impressive architectural creations that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure in the city.

4
Day 4

City Tour of Arequipa + Santa Catalina Convent + Sillar Route

Please note that shared-ride tours end near Arequipa’s main square.

The guide will pick up passengers at their hotel and begin the tour in the city’s historic center, allowing them to admire the architecture of the colonial mansions and experience the local atmosphere as they stroll through streets that form an open-air museum.

We’ll visit the Plaza de Armas and the Casona Tristán del Pozo, then continue on to the Church of La Compañía and the Sistine Chapel (belonging to the Jesuit order); and we’ll visit the Cloisters of La Compañía, with courtyards that once housed Jesuit seminarians and now serve as a shopping center.

Tambo de Bronce and La Cabezona: places where various commercial activities took place—including the famous barter of products from the coast and the highlands—and where artisans and tailors once set up shop.

Santa Catalina Convent: It features cells, narrow alleys, and cloisters filled with colorful flowers and walls painted in vibrant hues. The narrow alleys lead to various parts of the convent, passing through picturesque corners and resting areas. Visitors will embark on a journey through time.

In the afternoon, we’ll take a half-day excursion along the Sillar Route—a shared tour.

On the outskirts of the city lies a route lined with quarries, where even today workers hand-carve blocks of the iconic volcanic stone, known as sillar, used to build the grand mansions, churches, and famous buildings in the city center. Visit the workers and learn about the carving techniques that earned Arequipa the nickname “the White City.”

Today we’ll visit the Añashuayco quarry, where we’ll be able to see the immense volcanic rock formations that are still being mined. We’ll admire the beauty of the place, as well as the various sculptures created by the stonecutters themselves.

Our next destination is the Quebrada de Culebrillas, a sillar (volcanic stone) quarry that is no longer in operation, located between the districts of Uchumayo and Cerro Colorado. A 20-minute walk will allow us to observe the enigmatic petroglyphs carved into the walls of the ravine.

On our return to the city, we’ll see the Apachetas—stone structures arranged in a conical shape along the Inca Trail as offerings. The local population considers them an ancestral custom that evokes a mystical feeling.

You will be picked up at the airport and transferred to the Wasaí Maldonado Hotel, where you will be greeted with a welcome tropical juice and given a brief overview of the trip.

Next, we will embark on a journey of approximately two hours to the Wasai Tambopata Lodge. The journey begins by land, covering 47 km on paved road and 17 km on a gravel road, passing through smallholder farms and primary forests, until we reach Puerto Filadelfia on the Tambopata River, where an outboard motorboat will be waiting to take us on a 20-minute trip downstream along the Tambopata to the Wasaí Tambopata Lodge (a packed lunch will be provided for the journey). Check-in and accommodation at the lodge. After a short rest, we’ll take a night walk through the forest to observe and listen to insects, bats, and frogs, and perhaps have the occasional encounter with a nocturnal mammal. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge. The diverse sounds of the jungle will accompany our first night in the Amazon.

Overnight stay at the Wasaí Tambopata Lodge.

14
Day 14

Macaw Sightings and the Tambopata River

Very early in the morning, just before sunrise, we’ll board the boat that will take us on a journey of approximately an hour and a half to the Chuncho macaw clay lick, considered the most active in the world and located within the Tambopata National Reserve. The journey offers us the opportunity to enjoy beautiful natural landscapes and wildlife along the riverbanks; among the animals you may spot are tapirs, monkeys, capybaras, and, with a little luck, jaguars.

Upon arrival, weather permitting, you’ll witness one of the most spectacular moments in the wild: hundreds of parrots and macaws of different species gathering to eat clay, creating a fantastic spectacle of sounds and colors. We’ll have breakfast at the clay lick while we wait for the parrots and macaws to arrive. Mid-morning, we’ll return to the lodge, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim in our beautiful pool while taking in the scenery.

Upon arriving at the lodge, we’ll take some time to rest. Those who wish to do so will have the opportunity to swim in the Tambopata River or fish for one of the more than 250 species of fish that inhabit the area. Lunch will be served between 1:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.

After lunch, we’ll go on an ethnobotanical excursion along the Tambopata trails, where we’ll learn about the area’s medicinal plants and trees and observe the complex Amazonian ecosystem, including “walking” palm trees, ancient lupunas, hollow trees, and much more.

At nightfall, we’ll take a nighttime boat ride in search of caimans; we go out at night because that’s when they’re active, and it’s easier to spot them thanks to the glow of their eyes.

We’ll spend the night at the Wasai Tambopata Lodge.

15
Day 15

Lake Sandoval and Wildlife Viewing

After breakfast, we’ll begin our return journey by boat and overland to the Wasaí Maldonado Hotel, where we’ll drop off our luggage, have lunch, and rest for a while.

Then, we’ll take another 30-minute boat ride to Lake Sandoval. We’ll hike 3 km to the lake’s shores, where we’ll board a canoe for a paddle, enjoying the beauty of the landscape and observing the lake’s wildlife.

We’ll spot animals such as kingfishers, herons, monkeys, and exotic birds… with a little luck, we might even see the family of river wolves (giant otters) that live on the lake.

We’ll watch as day gives way to night; little by little, the sounds of daytime birds and insects will give way to the sounds of the night. Then we’ll begin our return to the Madre de Dios River and Puerto Maldonado.

After dinner, we can rest or take a stroll through the city. The rest of the evening is free to enjoy the nightlife of this welcoming city.

Overnight at Wasai Tambopata Lodge.
